In her second book exploring the legacy of slavery in the U.S., C.S. Manegold examines the fates and fortunes of three powerful families who owned John Winthrop's Ten Hills Farm in Massachusetts. These interlocked histories show the powerful grip of slavery in New England, Antigua and elsewhere in the Caribbean. Black slavery began in Massachusetts in 1638. Manegold follows the story of African slavery on that Northern soil  forward for 150 years. In doing so, she profoundly reconsiders the history of slavery in America from the earliest days of white settlement and the subconscious racism that is often the result. The book includes material on the slave trade, black slavery, Southern slavery and more. Slavery pictures are available on the website.
